Prioritize sleep

A wonderful day starts with sleeping well. Sleep is essential to radiant health, vitality, and beauty. It is the body’s natural way of rejuvenating and restoring the brain. When we sleep well, our body and mind repair and renew, which can help our concentration, memory, and mood. This helps us function better and feel our best the next day. Our health and sleep are connected. Adequate, restful sleep is as important to our wellness as good eating and exercise, especially if we want to live a long, healthy, productive life.

I prioritize my sleep, and try to establish a positive relationship with rest and relaxation. I can honestly say that after a good night’s sleep, my life is better. I make up my mind more easily, and my outlook is brighter. I focus better during the day, and I feel more alert. In other words, it helps me live more healthfully and happily, and meet the day with a pleasant mood. When I have more sleep, I have less stress and better days. It is a big investment in overall health.

If we don’t have enough sleep, we can’t function properly. If we don’t have quality sleep,  our days can be long and exhausting.

An overactive mind, too much excitement late in the evening, too much exhaustion from a long day at work, eating the wrong foods, lack of sleep the night before, poor digestion, worry or negative thinking, stress, and drama can all prevent us from sleeping well.

People who have inadequate sleep often become irritable. We need enough time to recuperate from daily anxieties. With better rest, we can prevent serious health issues, and gain tremendous benefits for body and mind, like improved immunity and concentration, happier mood, reduced stress, and increased energy. As a bonus, our skin looks fresher and more beautiful, our eyes look brighter and kinder, and we smile more.

I wanted to achieve sound, restorative sleep, and create a healthy sleeping routine. I created an elegant sleep room, set up a sleep-friendly environment, and established a regular relaxing routine before bed. It was a wonderful way to nurture myself, and a great way to end the day.

Discover what’s going on with your sleep or lack of sleep. Develop your own bedroom routine to reduce stress and enhance your well-being. Making simple, enjoyable changes can help you create a new and healthy habit of drifting off to sleep easily.

Here are some simple and practical tips for a restful night’s sleep:

Write down any worries or plans, then forget them

Visualize yourself as happy, beautiful, energetic, and successful. Dwell on this vision. Or find another comfortable and pleasant thought and dwell on it.

Go to bed at the same time each night.

Get up at the same time each day.

Train yourself to wake up every day without an alarm clock.

Make sleep a priority.

Eat your last meal of the day several hours before bedtime. If you get hungry, have a light snack.

Eliminate alcohol and smoking.

Keep yourself physically active during the day. For example, take a brisk walk on the way to work or home.

Enjoy fresh air daily.

Get at least 20 minutes of sunlight daily.

Keep the bedroom cool, dark, quiet, and free of technology.

Make your bed comfortable with cozy linens.

Block out the world with curtains.

Take a warm bath an hour before bedtime with lavender and chamomile essential oils to calm a restless mind.

Burn a lavender-scented candle (lavender is stress-relieving, and makes falling asleep easier; it is soothing, and calms the mind and emotions).

Take slow, deep breaths while you’re lying down.

Wear earplugs or play relaxing music.

Wear a silk eye mask.

Have a dream pillow (a small sachet filled with aromatic herbs) next to your sleep pillow. Squeeze your dream pillow and inhale the aroma of herbs for a sedative feeling.

If you want to sleep well, you could also try the following liquids, which support sleeping better: milk and honey, or valerian, kava, or chamomile tea.

Sometimes I sleep better with herbs that have relaxing properties, such as valerian or kava. I am an herb lover. I appreciate side effect-free herbs. They can be especially beneficial for sleep problems. Kava has been used to calm the body and mind, and encourage a good night’s sleep. Valerian is my favorite; it is a gentle supplement with a nice taste. It helps me balance my sleep patterns and get enough sleep.

When I realized that sleep is as important as food, water, and feeling good, I began treating restful sleep with respect and quality attention. Good sleep is becoming a luxury nowadays. Have that luxury. Let the luxury of sleeping well improve your mood, vitality, health, beauty, and feeling of self-worth. If you want to thrive, you need to prioritize sleep. It is the best medicine. Have a fantastic sleep ritual. Always retire with a positive thought. Become a master of good beauty rest. Enjoy your sleep tonight, and feel more refreshed and energized tomorrow.
