Pasta and Soba

Twirl your way through noodle varieties, and find the best buys!

Fast and fabulous, pasta and soba, health food you can enjoy. Quality is the key when buying pasta and soba. They come in countless varieties, each variety has its own delicious taste and texture. Spaghetti and macaroni are the most familiar pastas. In Italy pasta is so appreciated and they have a different sauce every day. Freshly made or home-made pasta is softer and more delicately flavored than dried, and it cooks quicker too. Supermarkets carry a very good selection of both domestic and imported dried pastas such as quinoa pasta, rice noodles, soba noodles, bean thread noodles, brown rice pasta, corn pasta (gluten free), whole-wheat pasta, Barilla spaghetti, homemade spaghetti, etc.

“Soba” is Japanese for buckwheat; buckwheat offers good quality protein. Soba noodles are packed with complex carbohydrates. Buckwheat noodles have a slightly coarser texture and are flavorful enough to be enjoyed without any sauce. The fresher the buckwheat flour the more distinctively nutty the flavor of the noodle. They will work as either lunch or dinner dishes. The Japanese serve cold soba, and enjoy them particularly in hot summer weather. It is always served alongside a cold, dipping sauce flavored with soy sauce, rice wine and thinly sliced green onions. Soba noodles are exceptionally versatile, you will recognize them by their color, which varies from pale beige to brownish gray. Serve soba in soups, with ginger, scallions and spinach. Try tossing the noodles with crisp slices of chilled cucumber, some black and white toasted sesame seeds, rice wine vinegar, and a dash of soy sauce for a texture-rich summer salad.

Pasta is one of the simplest foods to cook and is loved by everybody. It is a smart choice for a healthy diet, especially with lots of vegetables. Experiment with pasta recipes. Fill your refrigerator with sun-dried tomatoes in oil, olives, green onion, fresh basil, parsley, mint, lemons, limes, oranges, sweet peppers, mushrooms and other fresh vegetables. Create an Italian evening. Celebrate pasta with a crisp green salad, freshly made bread, and Parmesan cheese. While the pasta boils, have a glass of red wine, prepare your favorite pasta sauce, and linger for hours over dinner of such a wonderful atmosphere, joy, and pleasure.
